The company

Elia is the operator of the Belgian high-voltage transmission grid (380 kV to 30 kV) and is responsible for developing and maintaining the grid, providing users with access to it and controlling energy flows. The Elia group is a team of 2,000 professionals who have the task of ensuring the continuity of electricity supplies in Belgium.

As owner and operator of electricity transmission networks in Belgium and Germany Elia has an important role and mission in supporting and implementing Europe's energy and climate policy.

Expert Environmental

As an Environmental Expert, you will work in the Community Relations division. You will assist the Head of Environment & CSR with monitoring and implementing the company's sustainable development strategy. You will collaborate on defining Elia's environmental policy, taking account of current and future legislation (both federal and regional), public opinion, the political world and other constraints on the company (including financial constraints, the true situation of the grid and the company's background).
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Regularly monitoring legislation and organising contacts with the authorities and professional organisations in order to position Elia appropriately and defend Elia Group's interests.
  • Coordinating noise studies in cases where limits are exceeded and ensuring adjustments are made to facilities in order to comply with noise standards.
  • Monitoring biodiversity and natural habitat rehabilitation projects (LIFE2, protection for birds, salamanders, bees, etc.) and landscape integration projects with external partners.
  • Providing appropriate technical expertise in the environmental fields under your responsibility in order to enable optimal technical and economic implementation of projects.
  • Taking part actively in various in-house working groups in connection with implementing our sustainable development strategy (ACT NOW programme). You will manage Group-wide projects and collaborate with the relevant departments. 
  • As a sustainable development expert, participating in working groups in professional federations and organisations of which Elia is a member (UWE, VOKA, BECI, Bruxelles Mobilité, FPS Mobility and Transport, The Shift, Port of Brussels, etc.) in order to defend Elia's position and organise concrete avenues of collaboration. 
  • Being part of a team that manages the various environmental fields for the whole of Belgium: biodiversity, noise, soil. Depending on the policies defined within the Elia Group, these areas of expertise may change over time (currently, the other topics addressed include waste management, carbon footprint, water, EMF, RUE, renewable energies, partnerships, communication, training, etc.).
  • Serving as the company spokesperson in your areas of expertise and ensuring internal and external communication. Representing Elia at various events.

Your Profile

  • You hold a master's degree in environmental sciences or equivalent. Knowledge of CSR would be an asset.
  • You have at least three years of experience in a related field.
  • You have in-depth knowledge of legislation on the environment, land use planning and energy.
  • You have excellent communication and persuasion skills.
  • You work efficiently and you are a team player. You are organised and customer-oriented.
  • You can work autonomously and you are capable of taking part in internal and external working groups as well as Group-wide projects.
  • You are capable of developing your own network. This includes being very familiar with the main players in your areas of expertise.
  • You speak fluent French and Dutch and you have an excellent practical knowledge of English.
