System Engineer in shift 24h/7d

Reference ID:  587

Function

The National Control Centre (NCC) is very much driven by the constantly evolving energy landscape (integration of renewable energy, decentralised production, advent of new market players, shutdown of central generation units, security of supply, etc.), shifting regulation (EU network codes, incentive regulation, strategic reserves, etc.) and the further integration of European electricity markets (e.g. flow-based market coupling, and new borders with Luxembourg/Germany and the UK) – with all this going on while we roll out highly ambitious investment plans (Brabo, Stevin, ALEGrO and Nemo, to name but a few).
The NCC is organised into the following departments so that it can adeptly handle this series of challenges:

  • Energy Scheduling & Balancing
  • Operational Planning
  • Real-Time (RT) Grid Operations
  • Emergencies, Projects and Processes
  • Power System Operations & Security

In connection with these extensive responsibilities, we are looking for an additional System Engineer for Real-Time Grid Operations.
More specifically, this position involves the following duties:

  • Together with your colleagues, you will be responsible for continuously monitoring and adjusting the Belgian high-voltage grid, grid safety analysis and short-term and medium-term planning and analyse (switching, overhauls and capacities).
  • You will be responsible for maintaining balance between electricity generation and offtake in Belgium.
  • You will evaluate the reliability of the grid on an ongoing basis thanks to your thorough understanding of how power grids work and with the help of calculation programmes.
  • In the event of grid disruptions you will be responsible for preventing black-outs in all or part of Belgium or, where appropriate, for rebuilding the high-voltage grid.
  • You will anticipate overloads on the international grid and work with your international counterparts to find solutions to ensure the security of the European grid.
  • You will evaluate and decide on whether or not to allow additional or unforeseen capacity transmission or changes in generation patterns. To this end, you will be in contact with all electricity generators in Belgium and counterparts in other countries.
  • You will be the senior officer in charge with respect to the regional dispatching offices for grid problems.
  • In addition, you will participate in department projects and, together with them, you will guarantee their safety and efficiency.
  • Depending on the level of interest, you may also be deployed for other projects that are of major interest to the company.
  • You will take courses and ultimately give courses.

Your Profile

  • You are an industrial or civil engineer, specialising in electricity or electromechanics, or have equivalent experience.
  • You have a solid knowledge of the Belgian and European electricity grid and current challenges in the energy world.
  • Experience in the electricity sector would be an advantage. Experience in a dispatching environment or grid operation would be a plus.
  • You can express yourself in Dutch, English and French.
  • You are willing to work in a 24/7 shift (extra pay).
  • You keep a cool head in stressful circumstances.
  • You can quickly take good decisions based on sometimes incomplete information.
  • You are highly analytical.
  • You remain calm under pressure and can come up with creative solutions.
  • You can communicate assertively with others, including counterparts from other countries.
  • You can work in a team.
