The company

Elia is the operator of the Belgian high-voltage transmission grid (380 kV to 30 kV) and is responsible for developing and maintaining the grid, providing users with access to it and controlling energy flows. The Elia group is a team of 2,000 professionals who have the task of ensuring the continuity of electricity supplies in Belgium.

This role involves the following tasks:

  • You will be responsible for the economic aspects of the real-time operation of the Belgian high-voltage grid (150,000 to 380,000 volts).
  • You will be responsible for maintaining balance between generation and consumption in Belgium by adjusting the output of units in the most cost-effective way for the country. 
  • You will study and manage demand from the various market players (Belgium and other countries for energy exchanges) for same-day energy exchanges and will make decisions in this connection. 
  • You will sell energy to and buy energy from Belgian generators and foreign system operators (by phone and using IT tools). 
  • You will assist the System Engineer in operating the high-voltage grid during the current day and in preparation for the following day. 
  • Together with the System Engineer, you will assess and decide on Belgian power producers' requested changes to generation plans. NOTE: There is always an interaction between the output from power plants and the security of the high-voltage grid.
  • You will continuously assess the safety of the generating facilities and generation reserves (based on your experience and using calculation tools) and will report on this to the System Engineer.
  • You will write the daily national dispatching report (in other words, you will report to your line management and the company on purchases/sales, trends in purchases/sales and the main events on the grid).
  • You will work in shifts to ensure the dispatching centre is in continuous operation (24/7 service, working days and weekends, public holidays).

Your Profile

  • You have a degree or an A2 diploma + 5 years of experience in an economic or technical environment.
  • You speak fluent French and Dutch. A good command of English would be a plus.
  • You enjoy working in a team.
  • You do not lose your composure easily and you are able to come up with creative solutions.
  • You have a good analytical mind, you reason logically and you know how to take precise and rapid decisions.
  • You can adapt to a constantly changing work environment and are stress-resistant.
  • Experience in the electricity market or in the management of electricity grids would be an additional asset.
  • You are comfortable with IT tools. 
  • You are constantly working to become more efficient in carrying out your tasks in a non-discriminatory, transparent and objective manner. 
  • You will be given in-depth training.
