The electric grid is an important asset of the energy landscape that supports the social economic welfare. Elia wants to be a catalyst towards a successful energy transition by contributing to the development of a reliable, sustainable and affordable energy system. By building new interconnectors and integrating renewables in our grid we stimulate the European energy market as well as the decarbonization of our society.

The energy transition will lead to large-scale production and integration of renewable energy. The EU sets out to install 300 GW of Offshore wind power in the North Sea by 2050. To achieve this successfully, massive grid developments in the form of HVDC and FACTS systems will be required. Elia is positioning itself as a frontrunner in this transition. Next to already implementing two HVDC interconnectors (Nemo to UK and ALEGrO to Germany), and efficiently connecting the renewable energy produced in the North Sea through the MOG I platforms, Elia is developing the Offshore Energy Hub.  This has the ambition to, next to directly integrating 3,5 GW of additional wind production, becoming the stepping stone and interconnection point of the world’s first multi-terminal and international HVDC network.

To realise these ambitions successfully in a sustainable way, knowledge and expertise are essential. Hence two new teams have been created (Power Electronics & Virtual Substations). The team working on Power Electronics will centralize the expertise around HVDC, FACTS like STATCOMs, synchronous condensers and AC filters.
