To strengthen our Group Tax Team, we are looking for an experienced individual to join us as Indirect Tax Officer.
As Indirect Tax Officer, you will play a key role within Elia’s Group Tax Department, collaborating closely with colleagues and external advisors. You will report into the Group Tax Department, which is led by the Group Tax Manager and forms part of the wider Accounting & Tax function. Based in Brussels, the department provides strategic input and guidance to local teams across the group.
Your role and responsibilities:
Your main tasks include coordinating and overseeing the accurate and timely completion of indirect tax operational procedures (VAT and periodical support on CBAM, customs and tariffs), in close collaboration with other tax team members and external tax advisors. You ensure compliance with indirect tax regulations and support daily tax reporting for all internal and external clients. You are responsible for maintaining our tax data and actively contribute to the digitalization of all relevant indirect tax compliance processes.
Periodical VAT compliance
- You coordinate monthly VAT closing for Elia group companies (balance position booking, review and centralization).
- You resolve VAT reconciliation issues and provide root-cause analysis and implement resolving actions.
- You coordinate the filing of periodical returns in accordance with the relevant regulation for domestic companies.
- You assist in the preparation of import and export formalities linked to our offshore activities.
- You prepare VAT-related information and statements for tax audits and/or group reporting.
In-house indirect tax advisory & project support
- Act as a key internal advisor on indirect tax matters (VAT, customs, tariffs, ...), providing guidance to business units on complex transactions, new business models, and regulatory developments in close collaboration with our dedicated tax advisors.
- Support indirect tax-related projects such as ERP system upgrades, digital process implementation, and group reporting initiative, ensuring tax compliance is embedded from the design phase.
- Collaborate with finance, legal, and operational teams during mergers, acquisitions, or reorganizations to assess and manage VAT implications and integration challenges.
Risk management & tax automation
- You perform audit checks on A/R and A/P SAP postings and reconcile with VAT data (prior experience with SAP is required).
- You engage in process improvement and digitalization projects and demonstrate critical thinking about our daily operations.
- You actively contribute to the implementation and optimization of compliance solutions for upcoming topics (CBAM, customs, …), ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and operational efficiency.
- You maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable laws and ensure robust indirect tax-related policies and procedures.
- You prepare qualitative data reports on the VAT balance position of Elia group companies for internal auditing purposes.
- You participate in internal / external learning sessions and remain committed to the professional development of your indirect tax skills.
Your Profile
- You hold a degree in Legal/Tax, Accountancy, or Business Economics.
- You have at least five years of relevant experience in a similar business or consulting position.
- You have proven experience in coordinating projects and developing processes related to indirect taxes.
- You are experienced in working with SAP and/or similar ERP systems and have a good working knowledge of Excel and Word; familiarity with PowerBI is a plus.
- You are highly organized and demonstrate strong time management skills.
- You are a team player who acts with integrity.
- You have a strong ability to learn and effectively use new and evolving processes related to VAT reporting tasks.
- You possess good communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
- You are eager to self-develop in an international environment and enthusiastic about expanding your knowledge of indirect tax in the energy sector, including regulated sector contingencies, and you approach challenges with an open and creative mindset.
- You are fluent in French and/or Dutch and have a good command of the other national language, in addition to a good knowledge of English.
