Market & Adequacy Analyst
Requisition ID:  10832
Posting Start Date:  25/03/2026

Function

Elia is strengthening its “Scenarios, Market and Adequacy Analysis” (SMA) department to address the challenges posed by the evolving energy system. This team quantifies and analyses scenarios of the European energy mix and also conducts numerous public and internal studies on the future of the Belgian and European energy system, security of supply, flexibility, and the Belgian transmission grid, including interconnection projects.

These studies include security‑of‑supply assessments at different time horizons carried out by Elia (proposals for volumes under the Belgian Capacity Remuneration Mechanism, the 10‑year adequacy and flexibility study, prospective studies on the future energy landscape such as the recent “Blueprint”…), as well as studies by ENTSO‑E.

The department also performs economic analyses of high‑voltage grid reinforcements, used in bilateral projects with other transmission system operators or in the framework of Elia’s federal network development plan or the European Ten‑Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP).

The department maintains up‑to‑date scenarios of the energy mix covering most of Europe, closely monitors the development of new technologies, and develops various possible future system trajectories. These are then used in different SMA studies, by other Elia departments, and even by external stakeholders.

Part of these studies and achievements are available on Elia’s website: https://www.elia.be/en/publications/studies-and-reports

As a Market and Adequacy Analyst, you contribute to the energy transition by building future scenarios based on current trends and policies.

  • You analyse market developments and take part in forward‑looking projects and studies. You will also develop tools or analyses.
  • You work closely with internal market and grid development teams as well as with various sector stakeholders (regulator, government bodies, market actors, etc.). Given the nature of the activities, you regularly interact with different departments at Elia, as well as with ENTSO‑E, Synergrid or research‑related projects.
  • You create, enhance, and use Elia’s energy market simulation models based on your expertise.
  • You develop assumptions for long‑term European scenarios while keeping up to date with the latest energy sector developments.
  • You perform studies of the electricity system market using economic dispatch models, analyse the results and draw conclusions.
  • You contribute, within your areas of expertise, to the work of European transmission system operators on security of supply and transmission grid development, particularly within ENTSO‑E or Synergrid.
  • You maintain a network of expertise within your field.
  • AI already plays an important role in our development activities, including through AI‑assisted coding. In our broader processes, the use of AI is still at an early stage, but we have a strong ambition to integrate these technologies further. We welcome candidates who are open to innovative applications and eager to contribute to smarter and more efficient ways of working.

Your Profile

  • You have at least 5 years of experience, ideally in modelling or data analysis.
  • You have experience in the energy sector (not necessarily electricity).
  • You are passionate about the energy system and its challenges.
  • You closely follow Belgian and European energy news.
  • You hold a university degree (Master’s) in economics, engineering, business, mathematics or data analysis.
  • You communicate clearly and concisely and can adapt your message to your audience.
  • You can make well‑informed decisions and quantify current and future market trends.
  • You can code in a programming language (VBA, Python, RStudio, …) and are comfortable with data processing (data science and data engineering).
  • You can work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • You enjoy flexible working, and you have an open and innovative mindset.
  • You are proficient in French or Dutch and have a good command of English, which is the main working language of the team.
  • Openness to working with emerging technologies and contributing to innovative, AI‑enabled ways of working.
