The company

Elia is the operator of the Belgian high-voltage transmission grid (380 kV to 30 kV) and is responsible for developing and maintaining the grid, providing users with access to it and controlling energy flows. The Elia group is a team of 2,000 professionals who have the task of ensuring the continuity of electricity supplies in Belgium.

Expert Engineering Governance/ Substations

This role involves the following specific tasks and responsibilities related to your area of expertise (substations):

  • Dealing with complex technical issues and operational (experience) feedback within your field and integrating solutions into new or existing standards.
  • Devising engineering guidelines, which set out the instructions to be followed during the design and engineering phase and any missing intermediate steps making it possible to apply greenfield standards to brownfield situations (existing facilities).
  • Drafting technical specifications for contractors, comprising both general specifications (e.g. Basic Specifications and Building Blocks) and templates for particular specifications. More specifically, you will be in charge of experience feedback regarding these specifications and will serve as the main point of contact for the various project stakeholders (contractors, project managers, site supervisors, maintenance personnel, etc.), whose feedback you will use to continuously improve the specifications.
  • Working with Purchasing on communicating technical aspects to contractors, as well as compiling and managing shortlists of contractors based on companies' technical expertise and the technical certification of their employees.
  • Developing processes, templates and methods relating to technical activities (e.g. creating template project files, preparing and monitoring quality control processes for design and engineering work and implementation).
  • Mapping technical skills relating to system integration and creating the associated training plan for Infrastructure staff. 

 

Consulting with teams of technical experts in order to:

  • ensure professional handling of the technical standards and associated tools needed for projects to run smoothly;
  • see to it that the organisation has the most advanced engineering tools to hand to implement its infrastructure projects. 
     

Function

 

As Expert Engineering Governance, you will handle the technical aspect of infrastructure projects to ensure that they are rolled out as efficiently as possible and to the highest possible standard.
You will seek the best technical solutions that meet the technical and economic requirements of Elia, its customers and the market and are tailored to the development and maintenance of the grid. You will take account of all relevant Elia strategies relating to finance, the environment, safety and security, standards and other issues, and of the available resources.
You will work closely with the technical expertise and maintenance departments and pay attention to safety and security in all your deliberations. 

Your Profile

 

  • You hold a degree in industrial or civil engineering (electricity, electromechanics or mechanics) or equivalent and are interested in the development of the grid in general and substations in particular.
  • You have an analytical mind and excellent judgement.
  • You are assertive and can objectively summarise and align any differing views of individual experts.
  • You have a highly developed sense of initiative and can work independently.
  • You work well as part of a team, have good interpersonal skills, are persuasive and are able to get messages across clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • You are fluent in Dutch or French and have a good knowledge of the other language and ideally also of English.
