Function
Elia Group encompasses two major transmission system operators (TSOs) in two European regions: Elia Transmission in Belgium and 50Hertz Transmission, one of the four TSOs in Germany. Both TSOs operate at the heart of the European electricity system as they provide vital links between the electricity producers and their 30 million end users. The Group’s high voltage network, with its intricately meshed 18.600 km grid, transports the electricity generated by the producers to the distribution system operators and major industrial consumers. In addition, interconnectors with several neighboring countries allow electricity trade in European energy markets.
Within Elia Group’s IT, we have recently implemented a product organization as new operating model to complement our classical project-oriented way of working. The Central division, supporting both Elia Belgium and 50Hz but also the subsidiaries, offers a series of chapters specialized according to expertise areas in which the primary goal is to offer highly qualified resources towards the different projects and products.
In the Data Chapter, we are looking for a technology expert to take ownership of a set of specialized data integration technologies, with a particular focus on data exchanges with external parties.
These technologies support the reliable exchange of data between our organisation and external market participants, partners, service providers, and other stakeholders. They cover mechanisms used to send, receive, transform, validate, route, and monitor data exchanged outside the organisation.
The role therefore sits at the intersection of data integration, operations and stakeholder coordination. You will progressively become one of the key reference points for the platforms and technologies used to support these external data exchanges.
Because these technologies are relatively specialized and strongly connected to our enterprise and energy-industry context, the role requires someone who is comfortable developing deep expertise in a niche domain and taking significant ownership of its day-to-day reliability and long-term evolution.
Responsibilities
- Make architectural decisions, document and defend them
- Ensure the stability, maintainability, and evolution of the data integration technologies in your scope, including the platforms supporting data exchanges with external parties.
- Understand and manage end-to-end external data exchanges, including interfaces, data flows, dependencies, operational constraints, and expectations from internal and external stakeholders.
- Investigate complex technical and operational issues, support incident resolution, identify root causes, recommend solutions, and help prevent recurring problems.
- Identify technical debt, operational risks, and improvement opportunities proactively, anticipating future needs and proposing where modernization or investment is required.
- Define and maintain the roadmap for your integration capabilities, balancing short-term operational stability with longer-term technical improvements and strategic objectives.
- Provide clear technical input into prioritisation and investment decisions, through roadmaps, technical assessments, risk evaluations, recommendations, and planning information.
- Communicate effectively during incidents and periods of uncertainty, providing a clear view of impact, known facts, ongoing investigations, actions, risks, and responsibilities.
- Work closely with the Product Owner and other stakeholders, bringing the technical perspective into prioritisation discussions, making constraints and risks visible, and translating business needs into realistic technical choices.
- Collaborate with architects and the chapter, aligning your solutions with wider integration and data architecture, common engineering practices, technical quality standards, and ways of working while bridging target architecture with operational reality.
- Build resilience around the domain by documenting and sharing knowledge, collaborating with colleagues, clarifying decisions and ownership, and progressively reducing unnecessary dependency on individual experts.
Your Profile
- You are comfortable taking ownership of a specialized technical domain, including situations where priorities, requirements, or solutions are not fully predefined.
- You have strong experience with data integration technologies, such as messaging, file-based exchanges, APIs, data transformation, validation, monitoring, and operational data flows.
- Experience with data exchanges involving external parties is a strong advantage, particularly where technical, operational, contractual, or coordination constraints must be managed together.
- You are proactive, structured, and able to work autonomously, while knowing when to involve colleagues, architects, product stakeholders, or other experts.
- You enjoy investigating complex technical issues, building deep expertise, identifying root causes, and making pragmatic decisions when the answer is not immediately obvious.
- You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including during incidents or situations where information is incomplete or uncertainty remains.
- You are able to make technical risks, constraints, and trade-offs visible, and translate them into clear recommendations that support prioritisation and decision-making.
- You value documentation and knowledge sharing, and actively contribute to reducing dependency on individual experts and improving the resilience of the team.
- You are comfortable working in a matrix environment, balancing product priorities, engineering standards, architectural direction, operational responsibilities, and the needs of external stakeholders.
- Fluent in English. Knowledge of Dutch, French and/or German is a plus
