Posting Start Date:  24/06/2026

Function

The Grid Expertise and Standards Department consists of highly qualified and experienced professionals who are keen to use their expertise for the benefit of our infrastructure projects, ensuring that our assets are installed safely and reliably and operate flawlessly.

Our department is committ
ed to implementing the latest technologies and industry best practices in order to continuously improve the performance and efficiency of our transmission system. We work closely with other Elia Group departments, external stakeholders (specifically manufacturers, engineering firms and contractors), as well as other transmission system operators, universities and organisations such as CIGRE, to ensure that our specifications and templates are in line with market requirements and comply with all relevant standards.

As an E&I Designer, you will work in the Grid Expertise & Standards – Secondary Systems – Design & Typicals team.

Secondary systems are the ‘intelligent nervous system’ of the high-voltage grid. They allow the grid to be:

  • accurately measured,
  • protected,
  • controlled and
  • remotely monitored.

Specific examples include:

  • low-voltage (LV) protection cubicles;
  • relay and protection systems;
  • control and automation systems (RTUs, DCSs, SCADA interfaces).

Before these systems are installed on site, they must be thoroughly tested at the manufacturer's premises. These tests are performed during the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and are crucial to ensuring the reliability of the grid.

The E&I Designer's responsibilities include:

  • checking suppliers' standard plans and designs ('typicals');
  • where necessary, participating in FATs for electrical equipment;
  • designing standard schematic diagrams in AutoCAD based on suppliers' plans and designs (schematic diagrams include a logic diagram, current and voltage circuits, and a functional electrical diagram);
  • drawing up standard schematic diagrams based on design notes, standards, approved equipment, methodologies and guidelines for use in Elia's investment projects;
  • managing their own schedule in line with priorities and deliverables;
  • adapting all standards and tools that use macros/VBA in Excel and keeping them up to date;
  • designing and maintaining any additional tools in Excel, if required.

As you progress in the role, you will be given additional responsibilities such as:

  • training and mentoring staff within the team, so that knowledge is passed on and skills are further developed;
  • providing training for staff through the Elia Academy, thereby contributing to their professional development;
  • critically assessing technical concepts from other departments to ensure that proposed solutions are realistic and feasible in practice;
  • assisting projects with the correct application of our standards;
  • using your technical expertise to provide the necessary support to experts working under our framework contracts.

Your Profile

  • Associate degree/Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in electricity, electronics, or automation.
  • Good command of AutoCAD.
  • Proficient in Windows Office applications.
  • Excellent command of Dutch and/or French, good knowledge of the second national language, as well as a good command of English due to frequent contacts with international suppliers.
  • Willingness to learn and develop expertise in a field that will demand a high and specific level of expertise over time.
  • An effective and assertive communicator who is customer-focused, values teamwork, and is resourceful.
  • Flexible and assertive.
  • Able to work independently, organized, and proactive, taking responsibility for achieving results.
  • Quality-oriented, accurate and precise in work.
  • Interested in new technologies in an environment that is rapidly evolving to meet future challenges.
  • Skills and/or experience in delivering trainings or inspiring presentations.
  • Willingness and availability to provide training sessions and share knowledge through Elia Academy.
  • On average, you participate 2 to 3 times a year in FATs abroad, each time for a short period (1 to 3 days).

Offer

  • Salary: a competitive salary package, year-end bonus, double vacation pay, meal vouchers (€10 per working day), eco-vouchers, year-end vouchers as well as bonuses based on individual and group results.
  • Additional child benefit: for children under the age of 25, if you are still receiving child benefit for them.
  • Insurance: group insurance, hospitalisation insurance and ambulant care for the whole family.
  • Vacation: you will be entitled to 20 vacation days and 12 additional vacation days.
  • Communication: you will be given an iPhone, a phone subscription (for work and private use) and a laptop.
  • Mobility: you will be given a season ticket for public transport or a contribution to the cost of commuting to and from work (66% of the cost of a second-class monthly train season ticket).
  • Interest subsidies: after you have been with Elia for 5 years, Elia Engineering will be able to offer you a subsidy to reduce the interest charges on your mortgage loan. This will only be possible if the mortgage loan was taken out when you were already an Elia employee.
  • Elia shares: Elia will give you the opportunity to subscribe to shares with a discount of 16.66% on the average share price.
