Your impact
Would you like to combine your interest in power systems with data management and automation? Join the Power System Data Operations team and help ensure the reliability of the digital model of the Belgian electricity grid, which is central to grid operations and planning.
At Elia, we make the energy transition possible by ensuring that sustainable energy reaches everyone safely, reliably and efficiently. The development of renewable energy, batteries and flexibility, together with digitalisation and the increasing integration of the European market, is changing the needs of the power system.
In this context, you contribute to the development of Elia’s Digital Twin: a digital representation of the high-voltage grid used to analyse, plan and operate the power system. You improve data quality and consistency, integrate new sources of information and automate processes that support the work of operational teams.
Your role
You ensure that users have an accurate, complete and reliable grid model. Your responsibilities cover five areas.
Maintaining and improving the grid model
- Develop the model in line with operational needs, check the quality of the data and modelling, follow up on corrections and keep the documentation up to date.
- Update the model weekly in DIgSILENT PowerFactory, the grid calculation and planning tool, analyse discrepancies and implement corrective actions.
Supporting operational teams
- Support the operators who populate the Digital Twin daily and resolve issues relating to the model, data, tools or scripts.
- Adapt procedures to changes in processes and tools, and work with software development teams to improve internal interfaces.
- Support regional and national control centres in analysing incidents related to grid data. Identify their causes using load flow calculations, propose lasting solutions and clearly communicate their impact on grid operations.
Automating data exchanges
- Work with product and software development teams to develop the tools and interfaces used to manage the Digital Twin.
- Facilitate the automation of exchanges between the various sources of information and the Digital Twin, including dynamic data such as measurements, metering data and new connections.
Improving quality and performance
- Define and improve quality indicators, automate reporting, analyse trends and propose improvements based on technical analyses.
Supporting the team as it evolves
- Contribute to the integration of new areas of responsibility, the implementation of new modules and the adaptation of processes.
You work closely with regional and national control centres, Grid Development, which is responsible for long-term grid planning, and other relevant entities. These exchanges help you understand their data needs and incorporate them into the team’s work.
What you bring
You enjoy understanding how power systems work and working with complex data. You are comfortable in an environment where data reliability and rigorous processes are essential to grid operations.
- A technical master’s degree in engineering, such as a Belgian ingénieur civil or ingénieur industriel qualification, in electrical engineering, energy or an equivalent field.
- Basic knowledge of Python or the motivation to learn quickly.
- An interest in operational data, automation, power system modelling and analysis, and a willingness to keep up with technological developments in these areas.
- The ability to work independently, initiative, a drive to improve processes and the ability to adapt to a changing environment.
- An analytical mindset, attention to detail, independence and a sense of responsibility to understand complex systems and address the issues encountered.
- Clear communication and a service-oriented approach to support operators and work with the different teams.
- A good command of French or Dutch, as well as English.
What you will learn
This role will enable you to deepen your knowledge of the high-voltage grid and develop your skills in modelling with PowerFactory, automation with Python and managing data that is critical to grid operations. You will also learn to use and develop a large-scale Digital Twin.
Why join this team
You combine electrical engineering, data and digital tools in a role directly linked to grid operations. You contribute to the energy transition by improving a model used daily by Elia’s teams, while developing your technical expertise through an understanding of their needs.
