The company

Elia is the operator of the Belgian high-voltage transmission grid (380 kV to 30 kV) and is responsible for developing and maintaining the grid, providing users with access to it and controlling energy flows. Control Room Operator

Function

The Regional Control Centre (RCC) in Merksem is looking for a day dispatcher (control room operator). 
As a dispatcher, you will primarily be tasked with: 

  • preparing and coordinating the switching operations in the outage schedule to ensure that these operations are performed safely and that the facility is left in the condition requested by Elia's maintenance staff or the grid user; 
  • preparing and coordinating commissioning and decommissioning activities; 
  • helping to update the necessary operational documents (e.g. basic switching notes, operating notes); 
  • helping to improve Dispatching's operational processes; 
  • monitoring the grid, if necessary (as a support worker or cover for absent colleagues who are on the shift rota). 

Your responsibilities will include: 
1. ensuring that the grid's voltage quality constantly meets customers' expectations; 
2. dealing with alarms and anomalies on the grid and the systems; 
3. conducting the verification calculations required; 
4. handling and reporting on incidents. 

To this end, you will undergo several months' intensive training to acquire the necessary skills to gradually take on a range of tasks. You will first be tasked with preparing the scheduled switching operations and submitting these preparations to those involved for validation, as well as actively updating the operational documents needed to ensure the proper functioning of the RCC. You will also receive training to enable you to manage switching operations on your own in the future. 

In addition, we will provide a tailor-made training pathway within Dispatching to help you acquire the necessary qualifications to ensure the operation of the high-voltage grid. 
As soon as you have the required qualifications, expertise and skills, you will be able to join the day team (alternating mornings and afternoons - week 1: from 1 p.m. to 8.36 p.m.; week 2: from 6 a.m. to 1.36 p.m.; week 3: from 6 a.m. to 1.36 p.m.; week 4: Monday to Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 2.36 p.m., Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to 5.36 p.m.). 
You may eventually be transferred to the shift rota (three-shift system, with shifts from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m./2 p.m. to 10 p.m./10 p.m. to 6 a.m.).
 

Your Profile
  • You have a degree or a higher technical education diploma in electricity or possess equivalent experience. 
  • You have several years' experience as a grid switching officer. 
  • You are familiar with the theory of electricity grids, protective mechanisms, alarms, etc. 
  • You possess knowledge of electrical facilities in the field (high voltage, medium voltage, etc.). 
  • A good grasp of French would be an asset. 
  • You are comfortable with IT and common applications (Word and Excel). 
  • You are a careful worker and can work independently. 
  • You cope well with stress. 
  • You communicate well. 
  • You are eager to learn. 
  • Dispatchers are granted access to areas requiring prior security clearance as per the Screening Act of 11 December 1998.
