The Virtual Substations team is a growing team that is paving the way for the implementation of advanced digital technology in Elia’s substations. As part of this long-term project, this team is responsible for analysing different variants from a technological perspective, as well as all related (engineering) processes and tools.
Following this preparatory phase, the team will also be responsible for the actual development and implementation. This will take place in collaboration with internal stakeholders and external contacts from the industry (suppliers, software development companies, other utilities) to reach the best possible decisions. The IEC61850 standard plays an important role during this project.
 
Operational Technology Application Lead: what’s in a name?
 
We need you to:
•    Lead the agile development and implementation of new engineering tools, required to execute and manage digital substation projects based on IEC61850. These tools cover system design (digital and electrical), testing and simulation, documentation, and product lifecycle and data management (PLM/PDM).
•    Develop and challenge ideas and processes related to engineering processes and tools and translate these to functional tool requirements. Important topics are IEC61850 data handling and storage, UX design and engineering lifecycle management. 
•    Participate in tendering procedures, together with the purchasing department and other business colleagues: evaluate technical aspects, score the different solutions, and participate in the supplier selection process.
•    During and after development and tool rollout: Interact with internal stakeholders from business and IT, and external development companies. Collect business feedback, test new tool versions and provide feedback to software development.
•    Work together with software developers to find solutions for complex implementation challenges, keeping an eye on the overall engineering process and IT landscape.
•    Develop and lead trainings for new users to learn them to work with new tools
•    Monitor the market of (IEC61850) engineering, design and PLM/PDM tools and identify trends and new opportunities for Elia. Perform benchmarking with other utilities and tools.

•    Do you have a master’s or bachelor degree in a technical or IT related field? Check!
•    Are you fluent in English and either of the Belgian national languages (Dutch or French)? Check!
•    Are you a good communicator, able to write clear and well-structured reports and explain complex technical concepts in simple language to non-specialists? Check!
•    Are you pragmatic and results-oriented, while also developing conceptual ideas and long-term visions? Check!
•    Do you like a healthy mix of working autonomously and as part of a team? Check!
•    Do you have experience in developing and challenging engineering processes in a large company context, with many stakeholders and interfaces? Check!
•    Do you have experience in (agile) software development, are you able to speak the language of a software developer and build bridges with business experts? Check!
•    Do you have experience in digital transformation, have you implemented digital technology to meet a changing business and market context? Check!
