Grid Calculation and Simulation Engineer

Reference ID:  9008

Function

As Grid Calculation and Simulation Engineer, you will form part of the System Data Operation (SDO) team, which is responsible for the maintenance and development of the real-time, near-real-time and planning systems required for operation of the Belgian high-voltage grid. You will be actively involved in the data management that will enable Elia to achieve its goal of becoming a digital Transmission System Operator (TSO).

You will be responsible for the continuous analysis and monitoring of the quality of the results of the grid calculation modules in Elia's system tools (EMS and PowerFactory) for grid planning, near real-time analysis and real-time operations (Power Application Software (PAS) module) and the Operator Training Simulator (OTS) environment. You will also be the business single point of contact for all matters relating to data and the grid model in the EMS and PowerFactory system tools.

In this role:

  • You will build up expertise in planning and real-time systems (State estimation, Dispatcher Power Flow, Short Circuit Analysis, Security Analysis, Optimal Power Flow, Operator Training Simulator, etc.). You will request the necessary upgrades and ensure the consistency of calculations and their configuration between the EMS and PowerFactory tools.
  • On the basis of checks, KPIs, logs and fault reports, etc., you will analyse the quality of the grid models and results in the systems, and make the necessary structural and corrective adjustments to the processes.
  • You will be responsible for validating all changes made to the grid model before they are put into production.
  • You will develop the processes with the various stakeholders, document them and make any necessary corrections.
  • You will act as the single point of contact (SPOC) for all matters relating to the results of the PAS and the data linked to the grid model in the EMS system. Among other things, you will be responsible for analysing the necessary extensions and taking the lead for the stakeholder coordination meeting.
  • You will provide support to dispatching and database operators in the event of problems with the PAS part of the EMS system.
  • You will take the technical lead on the business side for all projects linked to aspects of PAS (e.g. additional modules, grids in neighbouring countries, etc.).
  • You will be responsible for matters relating to Operator Training Simulator (OTS) data and, in particular, for ensuring that the database is kept up-to-date. You will develop expertise in creating and maintaining scenarios for trainers.
  • You will develop expertise in CIM/CGMES format and other formats for exchanging grid data to and from the EMS. You will be responsible for the operational monitoring and quality of the files generated and processed by the system.
  • You will participate in cross-functional projects and also take the lead in implementing new processes/modules in your area of expertise.
  • You will provide back-up for management.

Your Profile

  • You hold a Master's degree in a technical field (ideally energy, electricity or electromechanics).
  • You know how to model a high-voltage grid (Digital Twin) in a software environment. You will know the properties of the various components and their function in the electrical system.
  • You have 3 years' experience in a similar environment (Power Factory, Energy Management System, Sincal, PSA, Convergence or other grid calculation applications).
  • Knowledge of Elia would be an asset.
  • You are flexible and customer-oriented.
  • You have a strong analytical mind and excellent communication skills.
  • You are proactive and capable of working independently.
  • You have a sound knowledge of Dutch, French and English.
