Grid Data and Calculation Engineer

Function

 

As “Grid Data and Calculation Engineer”, you will be part of the “System Data Operation” (SDO) team, which is responsible for the maintenance and development of the real-time, near-real-time and planning systems required for the operation of the Belgian high-voltage grid. You will be helping to define the systems for the grid operation of the future.

 

You will be involved in operational monitoring and data quality monitoring, using system tools (Energy Management Strategy (EMS), PowerFactory) both in planning and in real time. You will also be a business contact point for all matters relating to the grid model data in these same tools.

 

In this role:

 

  • You will master PowerFactory, EMS and other Elia tools related to your areas of expertise. You will be involved in the management of model data for these tools, as well as in the tool's grid calculation systems (load flow, contingency analysis, short circuit analysis, etc.).
  • You will develop expertise in grid model data exchange formats, in particular, ENTSO-E's Common Grid Model Exchange Standard (CGMES). You will implement and maintain data exchanges in these formats.
  • You will analyse the quality of the grid model within the Energy Management Strategy (EMS) and PowerFactory system tools on the basis of controls, KPIs, logs and fault reports, and you will make the necessary structural and corrective adjustments to the processes.
  • You will be involved in the weekly process of putting changes to the PowerFactory grid model into production, as well as the overall quality of the new version delivered.
  • You will be the technical lead for projects involving the updating of system tools. You will maintain contact with suppliers (Digsilent, Hitachi, etc.) and plan and monitor software maintenance for users.
  • You will provide support to the national and regional dispatching centres and to the Grid Development teams in the event of problems with the model data.
  • You will formulate the various processes and data flows with the various stakeholders, document them and, if necessary, implement improvements.
  • Participating in cross-functional projects as well as the implementation of new processes/modules in your area of expertise; and
  • Providing back-up for your line managers.

Your Profile

 

  • You hold a Master's degree in a technical field (preferably energy, electricity or electromechanics).
  • Ideally, you will know how to model a high-voltage grid in a software environment. You know the properties of the various components and their function in the electrical system.
  • You preferably have three years' experience in a similar environment (PowerFactory, EMS, Sincal, PSA, Convergence or other grid computing applications).
  • Knowledge of Elia would be a plus.
  • You have a strong analytical mind and are solution-oriented.
  • You are proactive, work independently, are highly-organised and an effective communicator.
  • You have the ability to pull projects together and ideally have some initial experience.
  • You are flexible and customer-oriented.
  • You are fluent in French, Dutch and English, or are willing to learn them quickly.
