The Infrastructure Department is responsible for all the engineering activities of Elia Transmission Belgium. Our highly-motivated employees commit themselves daily to the implementation of investment projects to strengthen the Belgian high-voltage grid and develop it to meet society’s increasing demand for energy.
Engineering Standards & Expertise (ESE)
The highly-trained and experienced professionals in the Engineering Standards & Expertise Department (ESE Department) are happy to make their expertise available for our infrastructure projects; this ensures our assets are installed safely and reliably and are able to operate error-free.
Our department strives to implement the very latest technologies and industry best practices, with a view to the continuous improvement of the performance and efficiency of our transmission system. We work closely with other departments at Elia Group, as well as external stakeholders (particularly, manufacturers, engineering companies and contractors), transmission system operators, universities and organisations like CIGRE, to make sure our specifications and templates are aligned with the market and compliant with all relevant standards.
Job description
You will be part of the ESE Department, which is responsible for the following tasks in various technical domains:
- Developing and maintaining standards and translating them into technical specifications;
- Participating as a technical expert in purchasing procedures for framework agreements;
- Providing technical support and expertise to project organisers;
- Qualifying, inspecting and certifying suppliers;
- Representing Elia in the acceptance testing of new materials;
- Collecting feedback in the context of ongoing projects with the aim of sharing this feedback with project organisers and updating standards and/or technical specifications;
- Maintaining and developing our technical expertise and knowledge;
- Closely following technological developments in our field;
- Sharing technical knowledge with the Elia organisation (training).
As the manager of the SecSys expertise team, you will be responsible for a team of 20 experts in the Secondary Systems domain. This domain encompasses the following:
- All protection applications and automatisms for the high-voltage grid;
- Telecommunications equipment and systems that guarantee communication between substations and also with the operation centre (central dispatching);
- Auxiliary-service systems for local supply of the substation;
- Measuring devices;
- Monitoring systems that are used to determine the condition of our installations and also register errors to make it possible to monitor the condition of the high-voltage grid.
Responsibilities
- Determining the team's vision, strategy and goals, in line with the business objectives;
- Preparing the team’s schedule, budget and staffing needs;
- Reporting to the head of the ESE Department;
- As the manager of the SecSys team, managing, supporting and developing the team members;
- Prioritising the team's many responsibilities, including the handling of any conflicts;
- As a middle manager, acting as the face of the SecSys team and the representative of the department/Executive Committee.
Your Profile
- You have a Master's in industrial or civil engineering;
- You will ideally have 10 years' experience in the project or expertise domain and in the management of a technical team;
- You find it easy to familiarise yourself with developments and you learn quickly;
- You have a strong technical affinity with SecSys applications and systems and are able to immerse yourself in them without losing sight of the bigger picture;
- You are a good and assertive communicator and a born people manager;
- You are a native Dutch and/or French speaker, have a good knowledge of the other language and have a more than adequate command of English.
