Function

Elia’s Datacom Belgium Department provides Elia with a reliable communications platform and supports various forms of telecommunications such as landline and satellite telephones, internet and Wi-Fi connectivity, including network security. The department also manages various telecommunications platforms to support the remote control and monitoring of high-voltage substations, data collection, physical security and communication with other companies.

Its tasks encompass design and architecture project implementation, active network management throughout an asset's life cycle, asset management and maintenance of various network technologies, including the optical fibre network.

The department comprises a number of teams (TDM & Optical Networks, IP Networks and Field Operations).

 

We are looking for a Datacom Product Specialist to join our TDM & Optical Networks team.

You will report to the TDM & Optical Networks Expert Team Leader and will work closely with the network architect and cross-functional teams, engineering and business stakeholders to ensure that the network infrastructure is aligned with the strategic goals.

 

Job description

 

As Product Specialist, you will have two main responsibilities:

 

As an innovator and product expert, you will ensure that Datacom always has a stable network platform that meets all operational requirements and all internal customer requirements.

  • You will provide for a stable network that satisfies operational and customer requirements.
  • You will test new functionalities together with the business: drawing up and implementing test plans, reporting.
  • You will research and introduce new network technologies through collaboration with network architects and external experts, evaluations and recommendations for application and will document these processes.

 

As a product support expert, you will support the management and maintenance of the network platforms managed by Datacom, including Datacom Field Operations, Network Operations (DTNOC) and the network architects.

  • You will guide the introduction of new technologies and network platforms: technical management, drafting documentation and procedures, organising workshops and training courses.
  • You will be responsible for the proper functioning of the network platform throughout its life cycle, ensuring the necessary network upgrades and keeping technical documentation up to date.
  • You will provide support when it comes to user questions and network issues: identifying and solving problems, offering Level 3 support and following up on incident reports and supplier issues.
  • You will verify and optimise network performance and plan for future growth.

Your Profile

  • You have a bachelor's or master's degree in industrial sciences/electronics/ICT/telecommunications or have equivalent experience.
  • You have sound all-round knowledge of modern LAN and WAN networks (optical fibre, PDH, SDH, DWDM, ethernet, IP, MPLS) and have expert knowledge in one or more areas.
  • You have initial experience in defining, testing and managing datacom networks.
  • You can assimilate new technical information quickly and are willing to continuously hone and broaden your technical knowledge of WAN and LAN networks.
  • You have excellent problem-solving skills and you study problems in depth until you find a solution.
  • You have strong analytical and reporting skills and enjoy going into detail.
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills and can work independently and in a structured manner.
  • You are customer-oriented and cope well with stressful situations.
  • You like to share your knowledge and help foster positive cooperation within the team.
  • You have a very good command of both spoken and written English and are also fluent in one of the two national languages, either Dutch or French, with a passive knowledge of the other national language.
