Power System Engineer
Function
The National Control Centre (NCC) is strongly driven by constant changes to the energy landscape (the decarbonisation and decentralisation of generating facilities and the electrification of society, etc.), changing regulations and the further integration of the European electricity markets. All the developments above have resulted in very ambitious investment plans in the Belgium high-voltage grid, combined with a continually-evolving approach to the operation of the grid.
To respond optimally to these challenges, the NCC consists of five departments:
- Energy Scheduling & Balancing;
- Operational Planning;
- Real-Time Grid Operations;
- Emergency, Projects and Processes;
- Power System Operations & Security.
As a System Engineer, you will be part of the Real-Time Grid Operations Department. After an extensive training period, you will have the following duties:
- Together with your colleagues, you will be responsible for the permanent monitoring and adjustment of the Belgian high-voltage grid and also for the balance of supply and demand on the grid;
- You will carry out real-time grid security analyses and, based on their results, take the topological measures necessary to guarantee the operational security of the grid;
- In consultation with your colleagues, you will make real-time decisions about the commissioning and decommissioning of grid elements for the purpose of maintenance work and/or investment projects;
- Together with your colleagues, you will be responsible for maintaining the balance of electricity supply and demand in Belgium;
- You will anticipate overloads on the national and international high-voltage grids and work with your colleagues from both regional control centres and with your international contacts at other transmission system operators to find solutions that will guarantee the continued operational security of the Belgian and European grids;
- You will evaluate and decide on whether or not to permit additional or unforeseen power transmissions or changes to the production programme;
- In the event of serious power outages, you will be co-responsible for avoiding a black-out in some or all of Belgium. When necessary, you will take on a leading role in the rebuilding of the high-voltage grid;
- You will also be involved in your department’s projects and, by doing this, contribute to the efficiency of the NCC and its impact on the energy transition.
