What you'll do as a Young Engineer in Asset Management & OCE Secondary Systems

 

Are you eager to launch your career in the energy sector by combining asset management with cutting-edge infrastructure and digitalisation projects? Join Elia’s 2-year dual-track traineeship, where you'll develop into a key player in both Asset Management and the world of Digital Substations.

 

This program is designed to give you a comprehensive technical and strategic foundation across two of Elia’s core domains. Through hands-on experience, training, and mentorship, you'll gain valuable insights into the maintenance, operation, and future-oriented development of Belgium’s high-voltage grid.

 

Traineeship Structure

 

Year 1 – Immersion in OCE Secondary Systems 

 

Dive into the future of grid Secondary Systems and digitalisation with a 12-month placement in the OCE Secondary Systems departments telecontrol, protections, settings and digital substation. You’ll work closely with experienced colleagues to:

 

  • Perform FAT (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SAT (Site Acceptance Tests) on low-voltage PAC systems (Protection Automation Control) in collaboration with an experienced colleague
  • Discover the everyday challenges in the field, including incident response and problem solving
  • Cope with grid incidents and understand the root cause analyses
  • Gain exposure to  the field part  of Digital  Substations and future pilot projects and working methods related to telecom design, software configuration, and automation 
  • Become a Safety Leader and experience fieldwork challenges firsthand 

 

Year 2 – Development in Asset Management Secondary Systems

 

Transition into Asset Management, where you'll deepen your understanding of Elia’s network and infrastructure through:

 

  • Shadowing experienced Asset Managers and participating in their daily operations
  • Learning how system and asset protection concepts and policies are developed and deployed and managed during their lifetime;
  • Learn about risk and system impact of protection solutions
  • Supporting maintenance teams and contributing to operational methods 
  • Engaging with stakeholders and participating in national and international working groups
  • Receiving technical training in Belgium and abroad to broaden your knowledge 
  • Learning how to shape long-term investment decisions for critical infrastructure 

What we’re looking for

 

  • You hold a master’s degree in industrial or civil engineering (electromechanics, electronics, ICT, or similar) 
  • You're technically curious, hands-on, and eager to apply your knowledge in practical settings 
  • You have strong analytical skills, are detail-oriented, and take a structured approach
  • You’re an effective communicator with a collaborative mindset 
  • You speak English fluently, with a good command of Dutch and/or French 
  • You’re safety-conscious, proactive, and enthusiastic about innovation and the energy transition
