Telecom Field Engineer
Function
The Datacom Field Engineer reports to the Field Operations Foreman and is responsible for the following tasks:
- Determining the daily planning of Datacom operational activity for the region, in conjunction with the foreman;
- Carrying out curative and preventive maintenance on all Datacom technologies (fibre optics, copper cables, modems, telephony, PDH E1, SDH, Ethernet, IP, DWDM, etc.);
- Installing and testing Datacom technologies in accordance with current safety and quality procedures;
- Participating actively in the development and expansion of the Datacom network in order to provide a high-performance, reliable communications network for applications in high-voltage substations, service centres, dispatching centres and data centres.
You will carry out the following tasks:
Planning
- Receiving and monitoring various planning inputs from different departments (Engineering, Asset Management, Datacom);
- Converting these inputs into the daily planning and contractor planning, in conjunction with the foreman.
Work preparation
- Practical and technical preparation of assignments (gathering together all necessary materials and information);
- Identifying in detail the impact on operational Datacom network and informing the various departments (Dispatching, Asset Management) about this impact;
- Implementing the necessary redundancy mechanisms to minimise the impact.
Carrying out the work
- Coordinating and performing all installation and maintenance work on all Datacom technologies;
- Checking and accepting work undertaken by contractors;
- Testing and commissioning Datacom installations;
- Implementing Datacom services with a view to connecting terminal devices by means of device configuration via management systems.
Safety
- Awareness, application and monitoring of all relevant safety rules, procedures and principles (for both people and the network).
Evolution/innovation
- Participating in determining the evolution of the Datacom network;
- Participating in the evaluation and introduction of new technologies;
- Helping to introduce new work methods;
- Formulating proposals for improvements and contributing to their implementation;
- Keeping your own technical knowledge up-to-date in order to keep up with rapid developments in the field of IT/Datacom.
Documentation & Reporting
- Taking charge of the necessary documentation (plans, information in management systems, etc.) and administration;
- Reporting on tasks and activities.
Your Profile
- You hold a secondary education diploma or bachelor’s degree in electronics/ICT/telecommunications or can provide proof of relevant technical experience.
- You have a basic understanding or knowledge of telecommunications or similar fields.
- As a minimum requirement, your skills include:
- Knowledge of and practical expertise in Datacom technologies (fibre optics, pair copper telephone cable, modems, telephony, PDH E1, SDH, Ethernet, IP);
- Excellent organisational and planning skills;
- Excellent communication skills;
- A thirst for learning;
- The ability to work independently and autonomously;
- A sense of responsibility and good risk appraisal;
- Customer focus and stress resilience.
- You are French-speaking and ideally have knowledge of Dutch and/or English, or are willing to learn these two languages. You are able to read and understand technical documentation in English and/or willing to take English classes.
- You have a driving licence and are prepared to travel around the region on a daily basis.
